Dirty Secret

Written for the Spring 09 Writers Weekly 24 Hour writing competition, this was my second attempt at this particular contest (see The Sins of the Father for my earlier effort). Sadly, I failed to place once more, but it was still an enjoyable process. It's clear to me that I am still rushing into the writing of the story before getting away from the more obvious themes - I think I hit on 3 different items from the judges hit list of common elements!

The Sins of the Father

Written for the Winter 09 Writers Weekly 24 Hour writing competition, this was a lot of fun to write. You're given a theme, that "Your story must touch on this topic in some way to qualify.". You don't have to quote it or anything, it just has to be a part of the story. The theme for this one was:

"The small wood stove kept the tiny chapel warm and their
snowy footprints had already melted by the door. The dim
light from the candle nubs played on the faces of the
minister and his wife, and made the bride and groom's
shadows dance on the empty pews.

Don't Shoot

Another tale from the dark side of my mind. It started with the opening image of twisting away from a bullet hitting the wall, and just spiralled out from there. This is the result of two read throughs and edits ... the hardest bit for me was the ending, so I'll be interested to find out if people think it worked.

Woodwork

Woodwork is a brief tale that I came up with as a writing exercise in 'flash fiction' i.e. write it straight through with minimal editing. I've tidied it up a bit more since finishing, cleaning up the sentences that stood out as clunkers to me. Click the links below to take a look:

Paper Chase

This started life as a small whimsical email, and I quite liked where it went. So a few weeks later I took the original email, and expanded it to become more of a tale. Then over the course of a day or so I tweaked it, and then declared it done. Available in rich text and as a PDF below.
